Change is perhaps the only constant in human affairs. As artists of change, our purpose is to deliver solutions that enable our clients, in turn, to transform themselves to meet their vision. Our means balances fearless creativity, the collaborative development of solutions, and intelligent realization. These three are not sequential, but concurrent, mutually informing processes; each shapes and disciplines the others.

We collaborate both with our clients and among ourselves. Creativity requires intelligence if it is to be realized. Collaboration must be intelligently created and fostered, not merely hoped for, and it requires fearlessness to be open to others and to speak one’s own mind. To realize the truly transformational solution is a collaborative process, demanding courage and imagination.

Our studios give us the structure and the freedom in which to practice; our exceptionally talented people are its energy. By eliminating the titles that both identify their expertise and limit their influence, we empower each team member to collaborate fully in every aspect of a project’s development, to think out loud, to question everything. We are not concerned with the source of a good idea, only with its capacity to contribute to our goals.

Each studio, made up of 10 to20 individuals, provides complementary skills in formal design, functional design, building systems design, and process design. From pre-design to occupancy, projects continue under the control of a single core team responsible to the client.

The studio system is a tangible expression at the grass roots level of DF ’s collaborative approach to design. Within each studio, individual members bring a unique set of skills and experiences that contribute to the overall strength of the group. Open discussions fuel insight and creativity, and provide immediate feedback. Daring concepts are fostered and effective approaches spurred. The results address clients’ concerns from multiple perspectives, and achieve groundbreaking innovations.

This close-knit organization of individuals promotes design rigor, as everyone holds a vested interest in the final product. As opposed to a strictly hierarchical structure, studios function laterally, giving all team members a strong sense of ownership in and responsibility for their projects. The studios set their own guidelines and monitor their own progress with weekly critiques of their work. The resulting camaraderie acknowledges credit where it is due, celebrating the combined potentials of everyone, then striving for the next level.

In describing their studios, the architects use terms such as, “high-energy, expressive, dedicated, empowering, and forward-thinking.” These attributes are highly valued and, therefore, nurtured. Based on market specialty, location and combination of individuals, each studio displays a unique character that encourages a high-energy focus in its own way. Our studio is highly collaborative and meets meekly to critique our current work. Everyone is encouraged to speak, because the best and freshest ideas are not necessarily from the senior members. Design round-tables are held regularly to focus on details and specific issues. We are model-intensive, and rely heavily on the computer to help conceptualize our work. The high energy that we feel at the start of each project continues right through to the end.

We start each project with a creative launch. This is a brainstorming free-for-all, an open-ended discussion that results in a more complete understanding of the project and client.

With projects ranging from higher education to research and advanced technology, we strive to integrate design with human needs. Our studio is very design-oriented, from the smallest tasks to the largest projects. We are solution driven, always looking to go one step further. Mandatory design critiques provide a creative outlet for everyone, encouraging collaboration and getting to know each other.

As a team, we are integrative, not additive. It is our task to help our clients re-envision themselves. We ask what is the human experience the project represents: what does the client what to have happen? what is that experience the client is seeking? Approached this way, a sports arena is a year-round venue for a variety of entertainment experiences; an airline terminal is not just a way-station, but a destination; a hospital is about well-being and about the culture of the practitioners and patients; a corporate headquarters creates for those who work there an experience that is the company’s brand. By placing the client’s goals in a visionary context, this exploration lifts the creative process out of the mire of program, orients it toward change, and insists on the singularity of every project: the particularities of the client, users, community, and environment.

We create for our clients and, therefore, we design with them. Their collaboration is essential because their vision is fundamental. That approach demands much of our clients – the commitment of their leadership, their willingness to teach and to learn, their courage to transform and be transformed – and rewards us both. We succeed for and because of our clients.

We believe passionately that architecture is for and about people, not an abstract exercise in self-expression. Our work, therefore, is the product of many people and many minds, not of one designer. It does not reflect a style, but reveals a purpose. We celebrate individuality, but eschew the individualism that stifles creativity, inhibits collaboration, and limits intelligence. We approach each project by identifying the underlying principles of human experience, not by manipulating form or calculating content without form is chaotic. Firmly connected, rooted in the human experience and conceived with vision, they transform.

DF takes architecture to be something not only designed, but realized. Good architecture makes a substantive contribution to our clients’ endeavors and success, to society and the environment. Great architecture is both – and something more: it is transformative. It transforms our clients: their brand and identity, internal culture, ability and means to succeed, by their own measure. It transforms not only the client’s relationship with its community, but the community itself, by engaging and inspiring its members and enhancing the quality of their lives.
